AVHRR: If the satellite orbit takes 102 minutes to cover 360 degrees, it travels 360/102/60 degrees per second. It scans 6 lines per second which is 360/102/60/6 degrees ~= 0.01. If the earth is 40000 km around in 360 degrees, that is 111.11 km per degree, making each scan line 1.1 km. That is the maximum resolution.
